Before he was “The King of Gotham,” Oswald Cobblepot was just an umbrella-carrying lackey to Fish Mooney– he was everyone’s whipping boy, and the lowest on the food chain. In the spirit of Gotham season 2’s “Rise of the Villains,” the San Diego Comic-Con exclusive “Roughed Up” Penguin figure from Diamond Select Toys brings us back to the rise of Gotham’s first big villain the Penguin, reminding us of the character’s oft-bloodied past. The figure is limited to 500 pieces, and was available both at San Diego Comic-Con this past July and last weekend’s New York Comic-Con.

The “Roughed Up” Penguin figure stands at 7″ tall, and is accompanied by five accessories: a standalone sidewalk base (unlike the interconnectable bases of the standard Gotham Select figures, as this was produced months before them), an extra pair of interchangeable hands, an apple, and of course, the Penguin’s signature umbrella.As always with products from Diamond Select, this figure is of impressive quality and detail, apparent in the character’s 16 points of articulation and richly-detailed clothes, battle damage, and environment. The attention to detail on this figure is amazing, as you can clearly see in the photos below (pay attention in particular to the intricate patterning of the Penguin’s vest, as well as the diligent painting of the blood trail from his head wound and spattering on his collar)! If you’re a fan of Gotham (and particularly Robin Lord Taylor’s wonderful performance as Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin), this is one figure you won’t want to miss! And be sure to also keep an eye out for the standard release Gotham Select figures of the Penguin, Jim Gordon, and Selina Kyle– available in stores now!
